One of the best things about living in Salt Lake City is experiencing all four seasons and witnessing Mother Nature in all her glory. October is one of the most stunning months of the year in Salt Lake City. There’s that hint of fall crispness in the air, the leaves are turning vivid red, orange and golds, and the best part — it’s sweater weather! It’s not quite yet ski season, and the kids are back to school, which means it’s one of the least crowded times to explore the city.
Here’s a few of our favorite things to do this time of year — from treats to tricks and everything in between. Fall in love with something new this season!
1- Oktoberfest at Snowbird Resort
Voted one of America’s 10 Best Oktoberfests by Men’s Journal Magazine, Snowbird’s Annual Oktoberfest attracts over 60,000 visitors and has grown to become one of the largest festivals in Utah. Every Saturday and Sunday from August 12 through October 15, 2017, including Labor Day on Monday, September 4. Enjoy authentic German grub, live music and local brews. Prost!
2- Pumpkin Nights
Looking for something new this fall season? For the first time, Pumpkin Nights is coming to Salt Lake City! This outdoor festival immerses you in a half-mile walking path of over 3,000 hand-carved pumpkins, larger-than-life displays, and multi-sensory experiences. The festival runs every night from Friday, October 13th to Sunday, October 29th at the Utah State Fairpark. Costumes are highly encouraged!
3- Haunted Houses
In the mood to get scared? Salt Lake City’s Fear Factory was featured on Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures and claims to be truly ‘haunted.’ Nightmare on 13th, the largest haunted house in Utah, has been scaring guests for 28 years and was named one of the ‘Top Haunted Attractions’ in the nation. And if you dare to make the 30 minute drive to Tooele — visit Asylum 49 — Utah’s first ‘full-contact’ haunted house. Warning: not for the faint of heart!
4- Boo at the Zoo
Boo at the Zoo is one of Utah’s Hogle Zoo’s most popular yearly events and favorite Halloween traditions. Kids 12 and younger are invited to dress in costume to trick-or-treat at various booths set up throughout zoo grounds. Trick-or-Treating is free with regular Zoo admission or membership from 9 am – 3 pm. BooLights, Hogle Zoo’s newest festival of fall lights, runs Friday and Saturday evenings through October 27th.
5- WitchFest at Gardner Village
WitchFest is the ‘witchiest’ event in Salt Lake City! Enjoy creative witch displays throughout the Village, a witch scavenger hunt, Six Hags Witches Adventure, Witchapalooza and much more. Select activities run daily through Halloween and some events require tickets, however admission to Gardner Village is free. Visit here for calendar dates and ticket info.
6- The Haunted Aquarium
Visit the Living Planet Aquarium during October to see fun and spooky decorations lurking throughout their galleries, along with special events like Skeleton Dives and Trick-or-Treating. Haunted Aquarium activities are included with Aquarium admission October 13 – 31. Looking for an adults night out? Don’t miss Sips Under the Sea on October 13th! Specialty drinks will be served alongside live entertainment. Prizes awarded for the most creative costumes!
7- Farmer’s Markets
Many Salt Lake City farmers markets continue through October with pumpkins, apples, and a local favorite — apple cider donuts! The Downtown Farmers Market is open on Tuesdays and Saturdays into October, and its Arts & Craft Market has a different kind of local produce: artisan jewelry, ceramics, and metal and glass work, among many other mediums. All are held in Pioneer Park through Mid-October.
8- Pumpkin Days at Wheeler Farm
For a family-friendly, not-so-scary Halloween outing, head to Wheeler Farm’s Pumpkin Days! Admission includes unlimited entrance into the hay maze, one wagon or cow train ride, and a pumpkin! The Farm’s pumpkin patch is generally open from late September through October 31st.
9- U of U Football Games
If you’re a college football fan and love Pac-12 action, catch one of the Utes’ games during October. On the October home game schedule: Utes vs. Stanford and Arizona State. The Utes play at the Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus.
Which autumn tradition to you look forward to most?
