Whether you’ve just moved in or about to sell, it’s time to come out of hibernation, open those windows and reintroduce your home to the warmer weather (hopefully). The bad news is, the process of doing so usually uncovers a layer of, shall we call it, post-winter grime? While you’re probably aware of what obviously needs to be cleaned, you might be missing some smaller items in your home that have been neglected during the cold, long Utah winter.
Giving your home a good scrub-down may not be your idea of a thrilling weekend in, but unfortunately, it’s not going to clean itself. Spring cleaning takes some time and patience, but it’s worth the pay off — especially when you decide to host the next summer BBQ.
So, that burnt mess in the bottom of your oven? Tackle it. The dust-bunny graveyard behind your shelves? Adios. Now is the time to take on all of those projects that you haven’t had the time, or let’s face it, motivation for. We have found, however, that there’s nothing a good Spotify playlist can’t fix.
Crank up the MJ and get to it! Here are 8 home spring-cleaning items you may have missed (your secret’s safe with us).
Washing Machine – You’re thinking what we’re thinking, why do we have to clean something that cleans…other things? SOS. Grease and grime tends to build up in washing machine drums, both in top and front loaders. If the image of grease and grime rubbing off on your clothes isn’t enough to jumpstart your motivation to clean, maybe a good, up-close-and-personal look at it will do the trick. Good news: all you need is vinegar and bleach!
Refrigerator Coils – You may have given the fridge a good wipe down, but have you ever thought about cleaning your fridge coils (a.k.a the bars beneath your fridge)? They tend to get caked in dust and dirt and because of where they are, often get overlooked. To keep your fridge running smoothly and save energy in the process, vacuum those coils once every couple months.
Bathroom Exhaust Fans – A clean bathroom exhaust fan helps to prevent mold. It draws moisture out of the bathroom, preventing it from settling into your walls and shower. But if the fan is covered in dust, it can’t do the job properly. Dust…or mold? Sometimes we have to pick our battles.
Range Hood Filter – When was the last time you peeked underneath your stove hood and checked out the exhaust fan filter? (*Coughs*…never) Its job is to collect grease that pops about while cooking and over time it may become so blocked that it loses its effectiveness. De-grease it with some boiling water and dish soap and it’s good as new.
Sink Faucets – Hard water deposits are stubborn and seem impossible to get rid of. (Are they really there if we pretend they’re not?) Unfortunately, they only get worse if you ignore them. Hack: Scrub them with a lemon to get them clean and shiny.
Shower Head – But if there’s water coming out of it…is it really dirty? (Preach) But soap scum and grime do clog up on your shower head and alters the flow and water pressure. Don’t despair, it’s an easy fix. Soak the showerhead in vinegar for about 15 minutes then scrub away the grime with a toothbrush.
Air Filters – Day and night, you breathe in the air in your home — dirty or clean. To get the air coming in your home as purified as possible, you’ll want to make sure your filters are new and clean. With warmer weather on the horizon, you’ll need that air conditioner in prime working order so check them asap.
Baseboards – The mother of all spring cleaning tasks. How dusty can they get, really? This seemingly monumental job is about to get much simpler. Next time you vacuum, place a brush attachment on the hose and run it over your baseboards. Voila!
We only have to spring clean once a year, right? Start this weekend, commit and power through it. Once you’re finished, you may just fall in love with your home all over again. Even some of the bigger tasks require minimal effort and you probably have most of the supplies on hand.
Now, onto that summer BBQ!
