For many in our community, the holiday season means family gatherings, bountiful meals, generous gifts and special memories shared with loved ones. But for thousands of Utahns, their reality looks much different. The season represents hardship, suffering and it becomes challenging for them to meet even the most basic needs.
We are fortunate to be surrounded by local companies who are doing extraordinary things for those in need. There are many ways to help them reach their goals, whether it’s through monetary donation, purchasing toys and gifts or time spent volunteering. If your family or company is looking for a way to give back this holiday season, these 6 Utah charities are changing lives for the better and in need of your help.
The Christmas Box House – The Christmas Box House provides a safe haven for children who have been abused, neglected or abandoned. Each holiday season, they launch Project Elf as a meaningful way for businesses, individuals, families to brighten the holidays for these youth. Last year, they served served 3,000 children and teens in need. There are several ways you can help including volunteering, donations or by purchasing gifts on their Wish List.
Sub for Santa – Sub for Santa is a local Christmas charity that provides gifts for children, elderly, and disabled in Utah County. Sub for Santa has partnered with United Way of Utah County for over 35 years and served over 5,100 children last year. You can sign up to sponsor a child or simply make a donation. Sponsors are asked to provide 2-3 new items of clothing, 2 new toys and 3-5 books for each child.
The American Legion Auxiliary – The American Legion Auxiliary in Utah sponsors an annual Gift Shop at the Salt Lake VA Hospital and serves veterans who cannot provide Christmas presents for their families. From December 5-7, veterans can shop for themselves and immediate family members (gifts are wrapped and shipped free of charge). Individuals and companies can purchase gifts, make a donation or volunteer their time at the Gift Shop.
Utah Food Bank – The Utah Food Bank is doing their part to feed the hungry and they provide several ways for the community to contribute. You can donate cans of food, your time at their facility, or money online and in person. You can also host a food drive at your company, school or church. All methods help fight hunger in Utah, and even a small donation helps. The Food Bank can turn a $1 donation into $7.35 worth of goods and services.
The Road Home – Each December, The Road Home, along with YWCA Utah and Volunteers of America, creates a holiday store called Candy Cane Corner which stocks new, unwrapped gifts for thousands of individuals and families in need. You can drop off items at either of their locations (Downtown and Midvale) or the YWCA. Gather your family, friends and co-workers and and shop for items found on their 2016 Wish List and Top Ten Needs List.
Humane Society of Utah – We can’t forget our pets! The Humane Society of Utah is hosting a 2016 Holiday Fund Drive for our local cats and dogs. You can help by supporting lifesaving vaccinations and medical care, nutritious food, safe shelter and a warm welcome into families who come to their rescue. There are so many homeless pets in our community who need our help and a donation will help care for these animals until loving homes can be found for them.
With so much focus on shopping and spending this time of year, there is always something we can give back and the best way to get involved is in our own community. Whether it’s time, donations, food or belongings, come together with your family, your company or your organization to help Utah charities and others in need. Share the love!
